Academic Career

In 1976 I completed my medical studies at the Rheinische-Friedrich-University of Bonn, Germany,  with the state examination and hold a medical doctorate at the same University. I continued my residency programme as a specialist in neurosurgery via the wards in Duisburg and Düsseldorf as well as in the Department of Neurology with the affiliated Max Plank Institute for Brain Research in Cologne-Merheim, Germany. I received the board certification in 1983 by the Ärztekammer Nordrhein. I was habilitated in 1985 at the Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf, Germany and appointed as temporary C2 professor for neurosurgery in 1986.  In 1986, I received a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at the Children's Hospital and Brigham's Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.. I was appointed as Extraordinarius/ Full Professor for Neurosurgery in 1994 at the Technical University of Munich.

Clinical Experiences

On 1.9.1992 I was appointed as Chairman and Professor of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Bogenhausen Hospital of the City of Munich, the Academic Teaching Hospital of the Technical University of Munich, Germany. Since December 1, 2011 I have chaired  the Department of Neurosurgery at Klinikum Schwabing and since April 1, 2016, all Neurosurgical Departments of the hospitals of the City of Munich. From 2000 to 2005 I was Deputy Medical Director of the hospital. I was acted as spokesman of  the Centre of Surgery for many years. Since 01.06.2018 I have been working in a private practice with in- and outpatient treatment in INI Hannover Germany and InnKlinikum Mühldorf as well as at Emirates Specialty Hospital, Dubai Health Care City- UAE

Research

I am significantly involved in the national as well as international development of modern neurosurgery, especially in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, in clip technology in aneurysm surgery and in various dynamic and rigid fusion procedures in spine surgery. My focus is therefore on oncological and vascular neurosurgery as well as on complex spine surgery. Due to my recognized  scientific work I am often invited as a speaker to numerous international scientific congresses. I also conducted numerous international training courses of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) mainly in the section of skull base surgery. In total, I have delivered more than 350 lectures, and published 102 original papers and 36 book contributions as well as 5 published  books. The H- Index is 31 (Google Scholar), i10-Index 46 with 2676 citations since 2015.

I am ann active member of 12 scientific societies among others German Society for Neurosurgery, German Academy of Neurosurgery (formerly Treasurer later President), American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica (board member).
